Meet the Editor
Pam Allen grew up in Chicago. After graduating
from high school, she briefly apprenticed as a dressmaker.
In 1970 she opened a small dress boutique featuring her
own one-of-a-kind designs, but after several years of 12-hour
workdays, closed up shop and went to college. She earned
a B.A. in French and an M.A. in linguistics from the University
of Illinois in Chicago, and taught English as a second language
to foreign students and adult immigrants living in the city.
In the summer of 1977, while visiting
some friends in Camden, Maine, she found life in a small,
ocean-side town irresistible. Two months later she moved
to "vacationland" and worked for several years as assistant
editor on a boating magazine, then as a proposal writer
for a documentary film company, then as mother of two children.
Throughout these various incarnations, Pam knitted. On a
visit to New York in 1983, she serendipitously shared a
cab with the Nora O'Leary, the current Fashion and Crafts
editor of Family Circle, who encouraged her to submit
a child's sweater design to the magazine. She submitted
three, they were accepted, and since then her work has been
published in many magazines (including Knits) and
featured in Knitting in America.
She still lives in Camden and is the mother of two almost-grown
children and two forever-young cats. |
