There are many ways to clean a fish. And, many ways to set up for some jewelry making. Two questions we recently received on the subject of jewelry tools: “How do you set up a workstation for torch firing enamels in your studio?” and “What are the basic tools you need to get started working with metal clay?”

This video outlines safety tips for enameling, the tools you need to get started, and an overview of metal clay tools that will carry you through a myriad of designs.

A few favorites include silicone-tipped tools, artist paintbrushes, and a water dish.

The tools many of us love the most are within the basics – a fine-pointed awl, a good quality paintbrush, a water dish–aka sugar packet container.

What I love almost as much as jewelry making itself is finding the next best tool. It could be a great new texture, the best stencil design for enameling, or simply an improved portable worksurface that’s perfect for teaching on the road.

I’m so glad I can work in the same space, no matter the techniques or media (unless acetylene is involved, that is). When I set up for enamels, I build up from a large tile from the hardware store—easy and affordable.

The full set up for a day of enameling fun.

Tools and jewelry making go hand in hand (pun intended). We love bringing you all the info you need for your next project or studio play day. Enjoy these other videos and articles for even more enameling and metal clay information.
