Affordable Yarns for Home Décor Projects
Handmade home décor items are a wonderful way to bring a warm and cozy vibe to your home. They can be pricey projects to stitch, though. Blankets in particular use a lot of yarn. So, how do you make your home cozy without breaking the bank? Here, we’ve gathered three of our favorite affordable yarns for home décor projects.

Before diving into the three selections, let’s talk about the criteria for calling a yarn “affordable.” The inherent affordability of a yarn is relative. What someone might consider inexpensive can be quite a lot of money for someone else. To give some parameters, we picked a knitted blanket and a crocheted blanket, and then we looked for yarns that would make good substitutions. The goal was to keep the cost of making the blankets under $200. And we wanted to offer the option to make these with acrylic, cotton, or wool.
The River and Woods Afghan knitting pattern calls for 2575 yard of bulky-weight yarn and measures 50″ wide by 72″ long. The yarn originally used was Lion Brand Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton, which has been discontinued. Retailers that still sell this yarn charge an average of $8.99 a skein, making the cost to knit River and Woods $224.75.

The Oaknut Blanket crochet pattern calls for 3129 yards of bulky-weight yarn and measures 47″ wide and 61 1/2″ long. The yarn originally called for in this pattern is Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky, and is still available. This yarn is $3.99 a skein and brings the cost of this blanket to $83.79.
Affordable Acrylic Yarn – Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky
It’s easy to see why Paintbox Yarns is our favorite for most affordable yarn when choosing acrylic for a project. To comes in a wide range of 60 shades. And the care instructions couldn’t be easier. If you knit the River and Woods Afghan in this yarn, it would cost $71.82 for 18 skeins. Find the yarn on sale and it’s even lower! As previously mentioned, the Oaknut Blanket would cost $83.79 to make.
Affordable Cotton Yarn – Knit Picks Billow
Bulky-weight cotton yarn can be hard to find. When souring the Internet, you’re likely to see a lot of t-shirt yarn or blends. Knit Picks Billow is our top choice in this category. It’s a traditional, plied yarn,100% pima cotton, and available in 18 colors. At just $8.99 a skein for 120 yards, it makes the cost of River and Woods $197.78 and the cost of Oaknut $233.74. The crocheted blanket is over our intended budget, but the quality of this yarn makes it worth it.
Affordable Wool Yarn – Premier Yarns Stitch Please
It might be surprising to hear you can knit or crochet a blanket in 100% wool for less than the cost to make it in cotton. You can! Premier Yarns Stitch Please offers 120 yards of wool in 56 colors for $6.99 a skein. Plus, when you order larger quantities of this yarn, the cost is even less. Care for wool yarn is not as easy as acrylic; you won’t be able to throw blankets made with this yarn in the washing machine. However, the warmth can’t be beat. You can knit the River and Woods Afghan for $122.98, or you can crochet the Oatnut Blanket for $145.34.
While this list dialed in on bulky-weight yarn, each of these companies offers a variety of yarns in different weights with reasonable pricing. It just depends on what you’re looking for! When it comes to yarns for home décor projects, these are three great options.
