If you’re like me, your love of fiber holds much more space in your life than the WIP you hold in your hands. In addition to my extensive yarn stash, I have stacks of swatches, scrap skeins, tons of notions, and, of course, more finished projects than I know what to do with! These things shouldn’t be tucked away in boxes and forgotten. Here are some unique ways you can organize your yarn storage, tools, and projects—and even display them around the house in unexpected ways.

Yarn Storage

Every knitter has their own solutions for yarn storage, from plastic bins to cube storage to shelves on a barrister bookcase. Whether you sort your yarn by weight, by color, or by whatever other metric, these ideas can elevate your yarn storage, and even help you display some of your yarn and WIPs.

Glass Jars for Yarn Scraps

Large glass jars are for more than displaying your dried goods. Fill a gallon jar with balls of scrap yarn and display it on a shelf. Seeing your scraps like this is helpful when looking for yarn to mend a project. This display also looks lovely—it would be at home in your craft room, but could also look wonderful in other rooms of the house.

Windowed Cube Bins for Yarn

I’ve stored my yarn in cubes for many years, sorted by weight. I will need to add some new cubes soon, and I’m planning to get windowed cubes that let me see the colorful yarn inside. I find that cubes are easy to sort through when looking for something particular, and sealable bags keep things organized and protected within their cube.

Rope Baskets for WIPs

I recently found that I needed a place to store my WIP project bags so that they don’t end up scattered around my home. I bought a couple of these baskets, and I love how they look. They can hold a couple of projects at a time. You could also use these baskets to store sweater-quantities of yarn, ready to cast on!

Shoe Organizers for Single Skeins

Do you have lots of beautiful, hand-dyed, single yarn skeins in your stash? Consider storing them in a clear, over-the-door shoe organizer so they’re always in sight, encouraging you to cast on! Plus they’ll add so much color to your craft room. You could also use these cubbies to store needles/hooks or finished knitted objects for easy access.

Shadow Boxes for Swatch Art

I love unique fiber art and I love a themed gallery wall. Use shadow box frames in a variety of sizes to display your swatches for a beautiful gallery unlike any other. It could also be fun to fill these shadow boxes with miniature sweaters, pom-poms, scrap yarn balls, or anything else you can think of!

Tools + Notions Storage

If there’s one thing knitters and crocheters know all too well, it’s the challenge of finding a reliable way to store those oh-so-important needles and hooks. Whether you have an overflowing basket of circulars and DPNs or a carefully curated collection of interchangeable tips and hook sets, these creative storage solutions are easy to implement and super space-efficient!

Tea Chest for Notions Storage

Store stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needles, tape measures, and more in an attractive tea chest, with compartments of different depths and a handy drawer! You can take what you need out of the chest and place them in notions pouches to use in your project bags, and replace them when you’re done.

Test Tube Rack for Needles and Hooks

For straight needles or individual hooks, a creative solution is to convert a test tube rack to a needle or hook rack! The holes allow you to sort your tools and stand them up. Organize them from smallest to largest and add numerical labels for sizes so you can grab what you need easily.

Utensil Organizer for Needles and Hooks

This attractive utensil holder has plenty of cubbies for needles and hooks and comes with convenient labels. You could use the smaller top cubbies, which are a little small for needles, to store tapestry needles, stitch markers, or other tools. That would still leave eight slots for hooks and needles!

Rolling Utility Cart

A small and attractive rolling cart can serve so many purposes. This particular cart is small enough that it can fit under most desks, and it can blend in everywhere. Use it to store your interchangeable needle sets, your crochet hook sets, your cases of circular needles, your WIPs and whatever else you might want to wheel around easily.

Project Storage + Display

Once your project is finished, where does it go? For garments, the answer might be a drawer or your closet, but what about shawls, hats, and mittens? And what about your garments that are out of season? I have some great ideas to share with you.

Blanket Ladder for Shawls and Scarves

Those who love farmhouse-style décor will know already know the popular trend of displaying quilts on a reclaimed ladder. Who said you must only display quilts though? Use a blanket ladder to show off your extensive selection of shawls, scarves, and handmade blankets!

Decorative Hat Display for Finished Accessories

I’ve been looking for a better way to display my handmade hats and mittens lately, and I just love this solution. It’s simple as can be—tasseled ropes hang from a dowel, with clothespins to hold hats in place—but it is effective and feels makerly. This would be so beautiful in your entryway, for easy access!

Windowed Storage Bins for Out-of-Season Handmade Garments

After you wash your handmade garments for the season, tuck them away in sturdy, stackable storage bins, with windows to see inside. Place them in a chest, under the bed, or in the closet until it’s time to wear them again. For protection from moths, store them with cedar sticks tucked inside.

  1. There’s not a lot of moth proof storage, because it’s not as pretty.
But you might mention that only an airtight container (like a vacuum bag)is actually moth PROOF. Not a bin with a cedar stick

  2. My favorite storage solution is a rack for my circular needles that my husband made for me. It is a 2×4 with 1″ diameter pegs, one peg for each needle size. It is attached to the wall behind the door of the room where I keep all my crafting stuff, so it’s very handy and keeps the needles from getting kinked.
