Favorite Lace Knitting Patterns for Changing Spring Weather
As the weather warms up and wooly sweaters aren’t an everyday necessity, I always start to think about knitting lace. Lace is the perfect fabric for unpredictable spring weather. It’s so lightweight and lovely, and it adds just a touch of warmth. I also love watching the pattern grow as I work. Lace knitting is rife with spring themes: flowers, leaves, raindrops. It’s easy to see why I associate the season with knitting lace!

Here are my five favorite lace knitting patterns from 2020:
Canopy Tee by Jean Chung
Knitted tees are highly underrated, especially delicate, lacy tops like the Canopy Tee from Interweave Knits Spring 2020. The lace panel down the front adds a bit of interest to an otherwise simple tee; I especially like that it’s a modern lace pattern rather than a frilly leaves-and-diamonds affair. The simplicity of this style means it can be easygoing and casual or elegant and romantic depending on how you style it.
Marmoset Pullover by Danae Smith
Lace is perfect for transitional garments: a long-sleeve pullover can be too warm in sunny weather, but tops like the Marmoset Pullover from Interweave Knits Summer 2020 combine the warmth of sleeves with the breathability of lace. Worked from the bottom up in fingering-weight yarn, it’s a surprisingly speedy knit; the body knits up quickly in stockinette stitch, and the lace pattern is easy to memorize. It’s a cute top for balmy spring days.
Viola Beanie by Laura Barker
I love hats for breezy days. They keep your hair contained and out of your face, and your ears don’t get bitten by the wind. Lace adds a bit of lightness to hats like the Viola Beanie, making it a cute accessory rather than a utilitarian staple. The wool/silk yarn makes this project from Knits Gifts 2020 extra lush and slouchy. It’s ideal for those times when you need a little extra warmth, but don’t want to wear your winter woolies anymore.
Bluets Top by Estefania Espindola
Spring clothing can be a struggle for me. I want to wear my summer dresses and sleeveless tops, but it’s really not warm enough for bare shoulders. The solution? A lacy, knitted layer like the Bluets Top from knitscene Summer 2020. The cropped length is perfect for layering over sundresses, and the side-to-side construction makes this top more interesting than your average tee.
Thrushcross Shawl by Jennifer Miller Comstock
I can’t talk about lace and not mention a shawl! Wraps such as the Thrushcross Shawl from Interweave Knits Winter 2021 are the easiest accessory for adding a little warmth and glamour to your look. They’re that “pop of color” that every outfit should have. This particular shawl also brings some glitz; the yarn combines, silk, mohair, and Lurex to make a sparkly impact.
