Lace holds a special fascination for many knitters. Its ethereal quality and sheer beauty make knitted lace absolutely irresistible, no matter your skill level. Though I had knit some very simple lace-ish shawls in my early years of knitting, my first “real” lace project was the Triinu Scarf by Nancy Bush. I had just joined Interweave when I saw her book Knitted Lace of Estonia and my love affair with lace knitting was born.

Nancy is a renowned expert in Estonian lace, and we are so happy to bring her wonderful DVD to you as an online workshop. In Knitted Lace of Estonia Nancy introduces you to Estonian knitting traditions, explains shawl construction, and shows how to create simple scarves using both traditional and modern methods. Hint: “modern” is shorthand for “use a circular needle and avoid sewing.” I’m one of those knitters who loathe sewing, so Nancy had me right there. She also drops fascinating historical tidbits. That modern version I love? Apparently, Estonian knitters frown at it.

Fun trivia: all those nupps—the little bobbles so indicative of Estonian lace? They add a lot of value. Shawls were originally sold by weight, and the multi-stitch nupps can make a shawl significantly (if only relatively) heavier. And nupps can only be knit by hand, so they are proof that your shawl is no machine-knit knock-off.

Finally, the workshop includes 3 — 3! — free patterns, including the sample Nancy knits throughout. Stream Knitted Lace of Estonia today and dive into a rich tradition from a notable expert.
