Painting Negative Space for Positive Results!
In this introduction to negative space painting, artist Staci Swider will guide you through the creation of two
mixed-media paintings – a tree and a fern. You’ll begin by adding texture paste and a background wash to create an interesting underpainting. Then follow along with Staci and student, Amy Jones, through the addition of layers of acrylic color and creating the composition for your painting. As you cover up the underpainting to reveal the negative space design, Staci will share her tips and tricks for ensuring the painting is cohesive, mixing interesting colors, and adding finishing touches with oil pastels.
